Fight back: defend youself

You should fight back when somebody criticise you.

 

Fill in for: take sb’s place temporarily

You can’t fill in for that talented person.

 

Find out: learn, discover

He discovered a good restaurant while walking around.

 

Fit sth. in: find time to do sth.

I have to fit to fulfil this job.

 

Fall apart: break into pieces

Old furniture will fall apart if you carry it carelessly.

 

Fall for: 1- be tricked by

            He is such a talkative person that you may fall for his lies.

              2- fall in love with somebody

            She is so beautiful that anyone may fall for her at first glance.

 

Fall out with: quarrel with somebody and stop being friends

            I fell out with him over splitting tea.

 

Back sb. up: give your support to sb.

            I will back you up as long as you do.

 

Break up: end (of a relationship)

            They loved each other so much but broke up without any reason.

 

Bring up: mention a subject

            I want to bring up the subject of inflation.

  

Build up: gradually develop

            His collection has built up in time.

 

Act on/upon: take action following advice/information

            I will act upon what you say so long as you tell the truth.

 

Act up: behave badly (esp. for children)

Parents shouldn’t act up their children. It’s bad for their psychology.

 

Amount to: be equal to:

            His reply amounts to a refusal.

 

Answer (sb) back: speak rudely to sb ( esp. a child to an adult)

            You shouldn’t have answered back your teacher. You were wrong.

 

Pass away: die

Atatürk passed away at the age of 57.

Pass by: go past sb or sth. without stopping

I have to pass by a furious dog while going to school.

 

Pass down: give or teach sth. to people who are younger than you.

            They pass their knowledge down from one generation to the next

 

Pass round: offer to several people

            It is traditional to serve guests food in Turkey.
